Indiana state partner and advisory committee
Purdue University
Who We Are:
The Applied Energy Laboratory in the College of Technology at Purdue University is a focal point for teaching and applied research about high performance buildings. The facility features a variety of HVAC and solar energy installations that are monitored and controlled over the Internet. It serves undergraduate students in Mechanical Engineering Technology, as well as graduate students pursuing MS degrees in Sustainable Energy Systems. The laboratory is a flurry of activity with students involved in the design, construction, and commissioning of a net-zero energy home for the 2011 DOE Solar Decathlon.
Our Team:

Bill HutzelBill Hutzel is a Professional Engineer who teaches thermodynamics, HVAC, and renewable energy in the Department of Mechanical Engineering Technology at Purdue University. He recently spent a year as a Science and Technology Fellow on Capitol Hill, so he is also interested in public policy as it applies to energy issues. He manages the solar workforce project with a long term goal of growing the renewable energy economy in Indiana. |
Our Goal for Indiana:
Indiana has an underdeveloped network for conducting public education and advocacy for solar energy. We hope to leverage the Midwest Solar Training Network to increase opportunities for training solar installers at appropriate venues across the state. Purdue’s entry into the 2011 Solar Decathlon, increased Indiana participation in the National Solar Homes Tour, and the establishment of a statewide Solar Working Group in conjunction with the Indiana Office of Energy Development are examples of efforts that will increase solar energy installations and manufacturing in the state. Solar workforce development is the ultimate goal.
